thanks to all who entered the ‘overlooked’ film competition. just check out all of these entries; so much diversity and so much to watch. this round we are going to switch up the judging a bit.
the SM team will choose the grand prize winner. we will look at storytelling, edit, color, application to the concept, and the visuals and come up with what we feel deserves to take home the atlas LTS10 from cinevate.
cinevate will choose the second place winner in the category of most innovative. that may come through in the storyline, the concept, or the execution, whichever they feels best demonstrates the most innovative film.
that means all of you will choose your favorite, and the most popular public vote will take home third place. please take your time, review the films, leave a comment and cast your vote. we will be adding our feedback once voting closes december 19th.

‘those simple moments’ took me to another place. the first time i watched it, the warm colors and the gorgeous visuals drew me in. the more i watch it (i think i’ve seen it at least 5 times now!), it’s the second half of the people and animals …the mundane elements that make me want to appreciate (and look for!) the uncelebrated but beautiful moments around me, even if i’m able to step outside for just a few minutes.
These are all beautifully done heartfelt creative short films. So much talent over looked in in this world.
Wow these are just… amazing!! At First Sight’s At Intervals has great visuals! but Markeda’s film Overlooked has such a solid story, really enjoyed watching it! Also the colors in those simple moments were beautiful. Really enjoyed watching them all. The future is bright in DSLR filmmaking.
i’m really digging these entries. it’s a privilege to be featured among such creative and different takes on the theme. bravo all :]
I’m really loving the diversity of genres that this theme has inspired. Looking at all these entries has really motivated me to continue shooting and try to push myself to do things that aren’t comfortable or easy for me. Great job, all.
I find that the films with the current highest rating to be the least appealing. Simple little moments is overtly cliche, while Transaction seem to only appeal because of the level of production. Otherwise the acting is distracting and the quick tight cuts confusing. Since the majority of the film utilize short to medium range shots I find that Markeda’s makes the best use of formal elements. The piece introduces emotions without directly involving acting. The editing is well done incorporating the score to create a piece that while slightly cliche, it holds a utlizes a minimalist approach that allows us to see past that.
are u kidding me? at intervols is the best thing ever.
hi i actually enjoyed markeda’s overlooked film. it wasn’t as full of eye candy as some of the others (at intervals) but the concept was very simple and the music track was pretty awesome (original written track!). i have to say that “at intervals” is most definitely the best piece by a long shot. i liked “those simple moments” but it didn’t have as much of a story as “at intervals” did (cinematography was on par with eachother though i think…). my vote for best sound, best story, best execution, best overall would be at intervals.
Great entries! ‘Indifference’ had a great story line, but I think overall ‘at intervals’ was the best. Great editing, and a unique route to take. Good job everyone!
Well said Luc and Patrick, we couldn’t agree more
Chanry, I’d have to disagree with the idea that working with actors automatically makes it 100 times harder. We have done both for these challenges, working with actors, interviewees and using just landscape footage. It really goes on a shoot by shoot basis. This one for us was by far the hardest and most risky, shooting for hours on end without knowing the shot is going to work till the end of the night leaves you on edge believe you me :)
I think its better not having categories, just look at the diversity of these entries. Most of them took it to places I’d never think of going, which is the whole point of this contest (in my opinion). I know the open ended style of this contest has really let us grow and get better quicker than I’d imagine. Not to mention the time & energy StillMotion puts into their invaluable feedback, its almost like a ‘mini evo’ experience :)

chanry,
the objective is to make the best film you can that applies to the theme at the time. yes, actors may be better to you, and tougher to handle, but shooting an event film to look like they are actors can be just as tough. regardless of the subject, it is the concept and execution that really helps a piece stand out, to me. i really enjoy not having categories so that those creating the films are able to take them wherever they want and we can focus on fewer but bigger prizes. regardless, we have the public vote entirely so you can interpret the results how you feel is most fair and judge accordingly. thanks for your comment
P.
I think there should have been different categories for the contest. Something along the lines of one category for using actors, and another for landscape footage. I think its a 100 times harder to put together actors into a sequence than putting together landscape footage. Both can be very impressive but it is hard to compare them. I will give recognition to those who chose to use actors with or without dialogue as in my opinion, it was daring and risky and deserves the recognition for that effort. If there were different categories we could vote on, I think it would do the final entries more justice. But…that’s just my opinion.
