it’s so neat to see what everyone put together for these short film challenges. we always try to choose a theme that’s open ended so that there’s plenty of room for each storyteller to interpret and communicate what they want to say with the short. sometimes so many of us get so tied up working on bigger projects that it’s fun to just take a few hours to film a personal piece for a contest, a festival or just for yourself.
watch out for our next short contest to be announced in the coming weeks. it will be our biggest yet with a guest judge on board, several prizes, and new competition guidelines with even more to work into your short.
P. and i shot a little aquarium short last year when we had a couple hours to kill during our travels and it brings a smile to my face everytime i watch it. i think it’s time for a few of us in sm to do one next time :)
here are the entires for ‘closure’ voting will remain open until july 22nd and the winners announced the following week. the overall best film is chosen by sm and winner will receive a brand new manfrotto 561 bhdv-1 monopod and second place wins a slick shootsac chosen by popular vote. best cinematography will also receive one $99/5yr music license from withetiquette.
don’t forget to head over to planet5D to chat about the films, share some behind the scene photos and tell us about your experience, challenges and triumphs in making your short. sm will be posting critiques to the top entries there as well so check it out as it’s a great way to get involved in the filmmaking community.

W and I love participating in the short film challenges. It gives us the opportunity to practice story telling as well as ask each other why we chose that lens or that type of lighting. I also find the shorts as an opportunity to challenge ourselves and try something different. We have our frustrations (i.e. Color…so difficult to use, yet so powerful) but we have loads of fun. Thank you SM for giving us this outlet.
