[meet] – ricky and ariel

last winter Ricky and Ariel called us about telling their story. six days later, they got married and we were there with them.

most couples plan their wedding months, if not years, in advance but not these two. they had originally contacted us a while back about inviting us to shoot their wedding in China, but when things fell through they decided to just come to Toronto instead. see travel has been a part of their relationship from the beginning. Ariel met Ricky in Glasgow, Scotland where they went to school; from there Ricky…

…moved back to China to start his career while Ariel stayed in Europe to finish her studies so they spent the past four years traveling back and forth to see each other.

over the course of a few days we exchanged a handful of emails and met with them to chat some more and get to know them better to find out who they are, what makes them laugh, what they do on Sundays and how they feel about getting married later that week. we only had a couple days but we covered a lot of ground. it’s not what we normally do but with so little time and so few involved we even jumped in and helped a bit with the wedding planning process, got them a wedding location and helped put together a rough schedule for the big day.

since they weren’t familiar with Toronto and didn’t have many connections here they decided to just keep the wedding simple. there was the two of them, two friends, the officiant and us. that’s it! there was no bachelor party, no chinese door games and no first meeting. in fact, the two of them spent the morning together, got ready together and saw each other throughout the entire day. it was certainly very different than most weddings, but that was Ricky and Ariel and we connected with that.
