letterpress fun

she’s old, she’s bossy, she’s got some quirks, but at the end of the day, she produces impressions that are downright perfect.  she also happens to be French.

inspiration is a funny thing – you really never know when it’s going to strike. on top of that, as we work in such a team driven environment with so many projects on the go at any given time, even when inspiration strikes, we rarely can act upon it right away.

in this particular case, With Etiquette was going through the process of having cards made.  after spending some time with Keegan and Katy of KeeganMeegan in their space discussing the project, i knew i had to find time to film the process.  their attention to detail, roots to the past, and love of their craft is something i just couldn’t pass up. so on the afternoon the cards were to be printed, i showed up with a camera, a tripod, 2 lenses and a light, and off we went.

the result is pretty neat and it really shows what can be done when you let inspiration take over. in this case, a short vignette that pays honor to the history of letterpress, but done in a way that’s faithful to the team at KeeganMeegan and their old faithful letterpress machine.

    Hey Von!

This was edited in Premiere, and it was just bringing down the saturation and tweaking the 3 way colour corrected to tone down the highlights, bring up the blacks, and add a bit of brightness to the mids. Nothing too fancy – just wanted to really get the color of the piece to match the tone of the press.

Wow, awesome!! Love the close and intimate look at the press operations, and the mix of human/machine action. How did you achieve the b+w look? I’ve heard different theories on the best approach for this, and your images have just the right touch.
