SMAPP, meet the world. World, meet SMAPP.

it’s official! SMAPP is launched and in the app store available for download right now. yes right now, as in load up the app store and get it on your iOS device now. you can find it here at getsmapp.com – it’s okay, we’ll wait.

okay, got it?

exciting isn’t it? two years ago Patrick, Ray, Justin and I were chatting at a hotel bar somewhere in California and right then and there the idea for SMAPP was born. since then we’ve been brainstorming, developing, refining, testing and building this app to be something that will help you in the field and help you grow as a filmmaker. we took all our years of experience, our mistakes, our collective efforts and made SMAPP to be something we ourselves would use.

that being said, it’s not done. we have a lot of other ideas we are looking to incorporate and build upon so we would love for you to give it a whirl and send us your feedback on what you like, what you don’t like, what you would like to see in the future and any technical blips and errors that may have come up. we don’t rigorous testing but if something isn’t right, we want to know and get it corrected for you so that you can have the same experience we’re having in the field making the most out of SMAPP.

as of the launch last night we’ve received a ton of support from a lot of people via twitter and we are over the moon about it. Mitch over at Planet5D gave a thorough and honest review of SMAPP on his blog and we encourage you to check it out and share it with a friend. we are always open to feedback so the more you share with us, the more we can share with you. we encourage you to send any and all feedback to SMAPP@stillmotion.ca and our team will get back to you as soon as we can.

and lastly, our team is hosting an interactive livecast tonight at 9PM eastern / 6PM pacific to share more info on what we have in store for SMAPP and KNOW as well as announce the winners to the Big Shorts film challenge. there will be open Q&A and we would love for you to join us! you can sign up for free the livecast at the KNOW site here and you’ll receive an email on how to connect with us tonight!

I must say that I find this app a serious disappointment to say the least.
I was expecting an app that reflected the quality of stillmotions work in both photography and video, what I got instead was a crude, amateur looking app that is only formatted for the iPhone. Visually the app has nothing in keeping with the quality of work I’ve seen from stillmotion, it’s as though it was tossed together to front the cash grab they have for their video tutorial sales.
    $199 for a tutorial… Seriously?
I have admired your work for some time, very impressive to say the least, but the quality of SMAPP is so poor that one needs to wonder… either someone else is doing your wedding productions for you, or you shopped this app out to the cheapest developer you could find.
There is just nothing in the app that isn’t in many other apps, many free btw.
Sorry guys, this app only brings into question your reasons for producing it. The only thing I see is a cash grab for the videos, and in reference to your $199 video, you guys just aren’t that good to be charging that kind of money, especially as it’s a crap shoot as to what you get for your money, and whether it’s worth it.
There was much potential for a very nice app and I bought it as soon as it was available thinking I would get something wonderful, now, I want my money back… I was hustled.

hey KGB. we appreciate you being honest about how you feel. we’re taking everyone’s feedback very seriously because we really want to make SMAPP the best tool it can be. if you have an suggestions on how we can make it better, please email us at smapp@stillmotion.ca.

Hey! Love your work, but I’m just curious – What qualifies you guys to teach? What categorizes you as filmmakers? Have any of you produced, written or directed any feature films? I’ve seen a lot of wedding videos, so I’m pretty sure you guys are videographers, but your “story-telling” skills haven’t really been put to the test if you haven’t written any narrative work.

great question Richard. what qualifies us to teach is a deep question and a rather subjective one. in the end that is up to the person listening to what we are sharing to decide if they feel our backgrounds, experience, and approach give us the proper qualifications to teach. we can look at results and say wholeheartedly that we have made a big difference in the storytelling and approach to many people through our in person workshops, interaction online, or just sharing tutorials. or you could look at our experience which started in weddings but has also seen us do commercial pieces for Apple or ATT. our longest project is definitely Game of Honor and that was very well received. in terms of our storytelling skills not being put to the test without a narrative piece, i would definitely disagree there. watch a wedding film like Veronica and Dan and say there is no deeper story, development, and process in that. while those storytelling skills are related but not the same as narrative work, we are careful to speak about what we know from our experience and to also not overstate things. this is just our approach, what we believe, and how we feel it can help others but we don’t believe we are remotely close to knowing everything or that there is one right way. we do know that we have had one crazy journey and that we have a lot to share that has value to others and can really make a difference. we will always look at everything we share and say critically to make sure it is as accurate, complete, and clear as possible.

at the same time, we are working on a narrative project, a pilot, and we will have that to share in the new year.

Congrats on the launch SM team. Super awesome app.

Suggestion – let people know that tutorials within the app are priced from $5-$200+. If we’re paying for the KNOW workshop, do all of these tutorials become unlocked?

      Christina Montemurro

I wondered the same thing – I know SMAPP is included with KNOW, but is it just the 2.99, or are the inapp purchases unlocked? Thanks.

A lot of them are free; I don’t see why they should alert people to in-app purchases. A lot of their tutorials and tools are free.

The reason they should inform people about the in-app prices is because you have to pay $2.99 to find out you’ll have to pay (much) more fore useful content. If it was a free app, then it wouldn’t matter because you aren’t out any money, but you’re paying before you know that little trick.

“You have to pay $2.99 to find out you’ll have to pay (much) more fore useful content.”

You don’t HAVE to pay over the $2.99. For that small price, you get access to several filmmaking tools [except for unlocking more under Get Creative I see], and 18 tutorials. The tutorials alone make the price tag worth it.

Have you checked out the Gear Bag section? There’s a lot of useful information there about gear.

Again, you don’t have to pay over the $2.99 for good content. Charging for additional content is beneficial for Stillmotion and their customers. Think of how much time they put into scripting, filming, and editing all of their videos. There has to be an ROI in there somewhere.

we’re incorporating a lot of the tools, like the Lens Selection Tool and Get Creative into the content of KNOW, so it’s important that everyone have access to them for the workshop. for that reason, we’re unlocking the download cost of the app, which includes the tools and many tutorials for free.
