[SMAPP] you spoke, we listened // SMAPP update

SMAPP has been out for less than a month and we already have a big update out! we’re committed to continually improving SMAPP so we’ve taken all the feedback from SMAPP users and made it even better and more accessible for filmmakers everywhere. if you haven’t downloaded SMAPP yet, then head straight over to the app store and download it.

to those who have supported us by purchasing SMAPP during its launch, we have made a few changes that will affect you directly so please read through this blog post thoroughly.

SMAPP is now free to all users.

although we need to support the continued development of our app, we believe the tools and resources currently available on SMAPP are highly valuable to filmmakers and we want to get it into as many hands as possible. now, we wish we could just reimburse the cost of SMAPP to all the current paid users. unfortunately, Apple does not give us a way to find out who has purchased our app and quickly issue a reimbursement. but if you forward us a copy of the receipt for purchasing SMAPP, we will gladly issue you a reimbursement for SMAPP via Paypal.

tutorial prices have been adjusted.

we’ve already discussed how and why our tutorials are priced the way they are on our blog but we also want to make them accessible to as many filmmakers as possible; and that is reflected in the price reductions.

longer tutorials have been removed.

many users have voiced that these longer and more complex tutorials are better suited for viewing on TVs and other devices with larger screens so we have decided to take them off of SMAPP for iPhone.

now don’t worry, many of you have already purchased these discontinued tutorials and we have a way to give you access to the same tutorials on other platforms. just find the iTunes receipt for your tutorial purchase of $39.99 or more, forward it to SMAPP@stillmotion.ca, and we’ll email you shortly with the details.

Get Creative is now free!

although we want SMAPP to be a sustainable project, we also believe in the power of collaboration and sharing ideas to push the filmmaking community forward. by opening up Get Creative to all users, we’re encouraging all filmmakers to submit to us their creative tips and we’ll update SMAPP regularly with the best tips.

if you’ve purchased a Get Creative pack in the past, please send us an email with your iTunes receipt verifying the purchase and we’ll reimburse your purchase via Paypal.

Shot List and Gear Up! are now paid in-app purchases.

we have a ton of exciting features planned for SMAPP and now that we’ve made our app free to all users, we need a way to support its continued development. we are building a powerful platform for collaboration with essential filmmaking tools, cloud sharing support, and versions for both iPad and Android. your in-app purchases will ensure continued development of SMAPP and support a growing community of filmmakers.

unfortunately, there is no way for us to make Shot List and Gear Up! free to current users of SMAPP. when you update your copy of SMAPP to version 1.2, you will be asked to purchase these tools for $0.99 each. for SMAPP 1.1 users, just send us an email with your original iTunes receipt from purchasing SMAPP and we will issue a reimbursement of $2.99 to you via Paypal.

and one more thing…

a brand spanking new Gear Bag!

we sat down one morning, tore apart the Gear Bag on SMAPP, and created a much more valuable resource for filmmakers. instead of just reading about specific filmmaking gear, we’ve recreated filmmaking kits that we actively use in the field to share how they’re used for certain shoots.

head to the Apple app store now, download SMAPP, and give it a whirl! have any questions or feedback? email us directly at SMAPP@stillmotion.ca.

Just checking in …again… on the android version of the SMAPP app.

Android is something we have always evaluated and considered. At times we were closer than others. Our focus now is an overhaul and improvement for the iPhone. Once we launch that in the coming weeks, we can start evaluating other plans for Android. We sure would love to, but SMAPP is entirely free now and it’s a ton of development money so we need to do one thing at a time.

Hey this is really great app. Please make it available for Android too.

I purchased your seminar package since I couldn’t attend in person, it’s excellent. But as everyone is asking I don’t see any reference to SMAPP for Android….I will never switch to Apple so is there anyway you can address this or give a possible ETA on release…ie…summer, fall..etc. Cheers!

I now this has been asked a lot but i haven’t seen any updates on the android version of smapp. I had an iPhone with smapp on it and im killing myself for moving to android because I miss smapp sooooo much!

Are there plans for ANDROID version?

    Wayne

    Hi SM!
The know tour shows that it includes SMAPP as part of the package, since SMAPP is a free app, does this mean that attendee’s of the know workshop will receive all the in app purchases for free?

    Thanks

      Hey Wayne,

I’m not sure I follow the logic. SMAPP is included for KNOW attendees, and after the start of the tour we changes the app from $2.99 to free. Each attendee is not getting anything less than they were, it just means we have opened SMAPP up to so many other people at no cost. In the spirit of what KNOW is about, we hope you can support us in this decision to bring SMAPP to more people.

If there was an easy way to offer a tutorial in the app, unlocked at the same value, we certainly would, but Apple doesn’t provide for such a solution.

As others have asked – any ETA for the Android version of this app? Thanks!

    Rodrigo

are you guys going to launch a version for Android phones / tablets?

    Chris Luong

I was interested in purchasing the more expensive videos…how can i obtain them now?

      Amina

we have them available for purchase on DVD now. give us a shout at know@stillmotion.ca and we’ll hook you up!

    Gabriel

Thanks for making the changes! I paid the initial $2.99 and will not be requesting a refund, because I appreciate your willingness to listen to user feedback! Thank you! Consider making your longer tutorials available on itunes. Just a thought! God bless you!

I’m very disappointed. I purchased SMAPP as soon as it hit the App Store and I was very excited about using it. I used “gear bag” and “shot list” for a shoot shortly after and I was very excited about how this app could be a permanent tool for me in the future. After the most recent update, which made the app free… .no problem, i was happy to pay, however… I find that “shot list” and “gear bag” are now for sale! So now, after paying for a now free app, I have to pay additionally for a previously free feature. Am I trippin?! This is NOT cool.

hi Lit Bit – because we have made SMAPP free, we are currently issuing a reimbursement of $2.99 to users like you who have initially purchased SMAPP. please send us an email at smapp@stillmotion.ca with a receipt of your purchase and we would be more than happy to send you a reimbursement. hope to hear from you soon. thanks.

      Lil Bit

Cool Cool Cool, anyway. I think if y’all added some “Location Scouting” type of functionality, it would be super dope. Basically, just something that allows you to take pictures and note the location like the regular iPhone camera app does… but integrated in to SMAPP for the sake of organization. Is this a possibility?

      Ray

thanks for the suggestion. we do have additional filmmaking tools in development and will take your input into consideration as well. keep them coming :)

    Jimmylee

Great update. I purhased the app the first day it came out and I will NOT be asking for my money back. It is such a helpful tool that I have no problem paying the small fee you were asking. However, I do agree that those tutorial prices we’re over the top lol so thank you for toning it down. Where can we get the old “legacy” tutorials if we haven’t purchased them before the new update??

      Ray

Jimmy – thanks for sharing your thoughts and we look forward to all the new stuff we’ll be adding to SMAPP over the next few months. the discontinued tutorials will be available via DVD soon and we’re exploring other opportunities to make it available online as well.

      -Ray

Agreed. $2.99 is not a high price for an app like this.
