A film without music is like a world without… music?
Whatever — the point is that everything sucks without music.
Now, many of you have probably licensed music for your films before through a dapper and heavily bearded licensing company called Marmoset, or through Stillmotion’s own music licensing outfit, With Etiquette.
For years there has been a lot of Jim & Pam-esque flirtation amongst the two companies, and today we’re very happy to announce that they have officially tied the knot and given birth to a brand spanking new website under the Marmoset name.
If we were to license a song to play as we mark this great moment in history, it would obviously be “Purple Rain” because this shit is epic, and Marmoset just looks really good in purple.
Seriously though, this is epic…
What’s so great about the new Marmoset?
Ok, you know when you’re trying to find the right music for your story, and there’s so much out there to choose from… it kind of feels like you’re walking through a giant unorganized record store while needing to pee really badly?
Relieve yourself, my friends. Marmoset’s new website is changing the soundtrack game for filmmakers just like us, in that it was partially built by us.
Stillmotion helped Marmoset create this new system from the ground up, to see that it would specifically cater to the needs of filmmakers who put story first and want to find the perfect song.
New search filters like mood, energy, and arc allow you to pinpoint the exact emotions you’re trying to convey in a scene, and give you visual representations of a song’s structure before you even listen to it.
In addition to their state of the art musical filtration system, the website as a whole just offers a ton of new perks…
Here’s a few reasons to love it:
- You can choose from over 7,000 songs in the library.
- Almost all of their tracks have instrumental versions (so clutch).
- Make a mixtape of your songs and share it with team members or a client.
- The “History” tab keeps a list of everything you’ve played, so no more “what was that song from the other day?”
- Download any scratch tracks you want.
- Kick back and listen to Marmoset Radio.
- You’re supporting real, blue-collar artists.
We’re already loving all these new features, but by far our favorite thing about the new website is how efficient this system is when it comes to choosing the perfect soundtrack for a film — particularly the Mood, Arc™, and Energy tabs that allow you to narrow their massive library of music down to just a handful of songs that fit your story.
Set the mood…
Identify the mood and structure of your story, scene, or even just one specific character — and then choose from a number of descriptive keywords that match the story you’re trying to tell.
The cool thing about this is that you can choose up to three different descriptions of your story or character, and this process leaves you with a small number of songs to choose from that are specific to your story.
It looks like this:
Watch it build and match the energy.
If you’re really obsessing about finding a song that matches your story’s crescendo (hint: you should be), you can use the brand spanking new Arc™ search function (yes, that shit is patented).
Does your story have a middle crescendo? Multiple crescendos? No crescendos? They got you covered.
The best part about this is SHOWS you the crescendos of the song — these are the song’s arcs. As visual learners (and I think it’s safe to say most of us filmmakers are), this is such a time saver and a really efficient way of finding what you need. No more scrubbing through songs to see if they rise and fall at the perfect moments for your story — hooray!
Also, it looks pretty:
Maybe you’ve already identified the mood of your story or character, but you want to find a song that matches the energy level of your particular scene.
Narrow down your results even further by separating the high energy tracks from the low energy ones using the Energy tab:
We’re very tight with Marmoset and we license through them all the time — that’s why we wanted to be a part of the process as they built this website. We knew they wanted to make their system into a true storytelling tool that real filmmakers can use and enjoy.
Collaborating with Marmoset on this resulted in this amazing system that allows you to discover your soundtrack based on your story, and for filmmakers that’s kind of a dream come true.
Want more cowbell?
Sometimes you’ll hear a track, have a beautiful moment with it, rip off your headphones and yell “THAT’S THE SONG!”…
…”but that weird noise at 0:39 kind of ruins everything.”
Guess what? Many of the artists on Marmoset’s roster are:
1. Really nice people.
2. Totally down to customize one of their songs for you.
You can find tracks that are customizable by using the Customizable search feature. Get all the cowbell you want.
Oh yeah, and they make music too.
Want a completely original score for your piece?
Marmoset’s team of musicians and producers is always ready to make some magic happen. Communicate with the staff about your project, tell them exactly how you want it to feel and what you want to hear. These are real musicians living and making music in the Pacific Northwest, who pour their hearts into any musical project they take on.
If it’s within your budget, having a custom soundtrack created can really take your piece to the next level. When you go this route, it’s no longer about finding the right music for your film — it’s about creating it.
Here’s a piece Marmoset scored for Internet Explorer — be sure to check out all of their original new work on the new site.
Forget about filmmaking for awhile and just enjoy some music.
Business, schmizness… this site is just great for enjoying good music that’s been hunted down by a bunch of people who know what they’re doing.
Use the Mixtape function to create a mixtape of your favorite songs and send it to your sweetheart, your mom, your barista, or just blast it through the kitchen while you’re making breakfast.
The Mixtape function is great for business too.
Create a Mixtape of songs you’re considering for your story, and share it with a team member or your client to efficiently communicate and find the perfect soundtrack to your story.
Bonus: Marmoset has also created Marmoset Radio, which allows you to enjoy their catalog without having to make any choices whatsoever.
…and we made them a cute video:
To make a Mixtape, license music, and just really enjoy all the delicious fruits of this website, you’ll first want to create your own account at Marmoset. It’s easy! Head to Marmoset and register in the sidebar.
Ok, don’t actually forget about filmmaking.
If you couldn’t tell, we’re just really excited about Marmoset’s new developments because they allow us to collaborate, coordinate, and just tell stories better.
It’s so nice to be able to tell stories without having to deal with the fluff and pretentious attitudes that you’ll so often encounter in this industry. We believe in telling stories that matter, and so does Marmoset — that’s what makes them such a great asset to filmmakers at any level of experience.
Honestly, we could ramble about how excited we are for this all day — but you should probably just go check it out for yourself.
What are you diggin about the new site?
Leave a comment and show the Marmoset crew some love! Or some hate, if you must…
