so what is that evolution experience?
seven months ago i proudly inherited an amazingly rewarding title – a FATHER
it’s an incredible experience to see a small little person come to life. to hear her first cry, to see her grow every day, to watch her first smiles, first rollover. to hear her say her first “words”. it’s fun to secure her when she’s trying to sit by herself and it’s very emotional to realize that she no longer needs your help. it’s rewarding to make it home in time for a bath. and it’s a learning experience to watch her learn, explore and figure out new things. things we take for granted aren’t granted anymore. things we don’t think about are now being put more thought into.
but above it all, it’s extremely building and fulfilling to know that it is your baby teaching you… and so both sides evolve

Carlos’ sde
the birth of an sde is pretty interesting. if you ask any us, every sde has it’s own story.
one is planned and story-boarded well in advance, the other is a sparkle in our head during a rehearsal. sometimes we find a theme during the wedding day and the sde takes it’s shape minutes before we show it.
when i walked in to Robin’s hotel room the morning of the wedding, within minutes i had the 1st meeting sequence edited in my head. there she was watching a chick flick, surrounded by friends, absorbed by somebody else’s story, a fictional one. but what was about to happen was a real, true story… part of that story was Robin’s mom weaving a basket to carry the rings down the aisle.
———–
the morning after the wedding we experienced something extraordinary. we were eating lunch as Robin and Carlos, with a group of family members and friends, showed up at the hotel restaurant (…)
we put the laptop on the bar countertop and played the sde…
even though everybody has seen it the night before, it seemed more emotional this time around. being there in an intimate setting with the couple, where you could hear even quietest sniffle, i got emotional.
a big thanks to ray and joyce for their huge help.
i spent an extra 10 min today to touch up some color grading :)

we decided to expand our education offerings to the youngest. our little Zuzanna went through a storytelling presentation while we were in jamaica and she proved that the age of six months is the time to start learning about cinematography. although she still struggles with keyboard shortcuts, she’s learning fast.
stay tuned for more…
oh, btw, only tigers allowed!

gary’s wedding
the morning of the wedding is always full of many emotions. whether it’s stress, anxiety, nervousness or joy and happiness. often time, those emotions aren’t the ones the couple would like to feel and they aren’t sure how to calm down.
so how do you go from point A to point B?
well, everybody copes with it in their own way. some play games, some listen to music, while others dance or have some drinks.
the morning of katie and gary’s wedding, they got ready on two different levels of the same building, making just a tad more stressful. the guys seemed relaxed the entire morning. first some golfing, then a few beers at the bar. katie couldn’t find a place for herself the entire time // she probably changed her seat twenty times in the course of two hours. one of the times when i got back from shooting the guys, katie asked if the guys were having drinks at the bar. i had to say yes. she seemed so jealous. it wasn’t long after that katie found her own way to cope with her stress. her solution was in the form of a golf cart. when she got back, she was a different person.
it is small things like these that we really love capturing and building on. for somebody from the outside it can just seem like a ride on a golf cart. for katie, it was way more than that.
here are two sides of the day // the same day edit as well as amina’s favourite photos.

tomek’s sde
we just wrapped up the evolution experience 2.0 at stillmotion with twelve awesome people from around the world. during the 3 day workshop, a big part of what we tried to get across was to see things differently, and to find what is right in front of you but you never see.
this past saturday we had a pleasure to shoot basia and tomek’s wedding in hamilton. their day was a like a mini ‘workshop’ for us.
it’s so easy to focus on only the bride and groom, overlooking everything around them, such us preparing a home made polish breakfast. for them, this was part of their unique story. it can also be easy to get caught up just trying to cover the events as they are happening instead of interpreting them in our very own style. taking the time to think about your lens choice, composition, or the way in which you are shooting a sequence to communicate their story is a very effective way to push yourself to be a better storyteller.
along the way we watched the groomsmen undertake the quest to get in the bride’s house and witnessed the biggest crowd surrounding the couple during their first meeting and traditional blessing.
richer by a day full of love, fun and emotions, as well as an amazing response to the sde by their 300 family and friends, it certainly got us pumped for the workshop.
thank you basia and tomek :)
more to come about the evo experience this week.

josh
when i look back at laura and josh’s wedding, many things come to mind. it was our first all 35mm adapter wedding, our first time in mexico, josh and laura are such a fun loving couple, and together we all had such a great time.
we had so much fun the whole week there. oh, i miss those tropics.
for those who remember their highlights, they were very emotional. a few days after the wedding we went out to the city and did a portrait shoot. here’s a clip that i put together from that session. i love the contrast it has from their highlights.

norbert’s sde
a day filled with sparklers, cathedrals, rain…lots of rain, laughter, pierogies, and some polish. thanks for sharing your day with us.
we added in some english subtitles for those of you not up to snuff with your polish.

joseph // a san fran sde
seeing the san jose cathedral for the first time the day before the wedding, we knew right away that it definitely be a highlight in itself.
what we didn’t yet know was the fact that angela and joseph were going to see each other before the ceremony, and then walk to the church together. i especially love the flower girl’s miniature pink umbrella. she was just so happy to hold it.
and what a way to top of the night, and sde, with a very energetic chinese dragons performance.
we came up with the concept for the opening the night before the sde, but even as we started shooting the day of the wedding, we weren’t sure we would be able to pull it off

cinderella // aaron
melissa
we are so fortunate to work with couples who allow us to try new things and evolve each and every single time we pick up the camera
for their story shoot, the plan was to interview more than just a couple. we ended up with friends, family (including nieces) having a mini party at the couches in our studio as we interviewed everyone one by one.
although we started with one concept in mind, many other ideas emerged during filming, so by the time we got to interview aaron and melissa, i had a clear view of where i wanted this to go. the route we took was risky, as we decided on focusing more on the differences between them which proved to be quite the show for everyone to share at the reception. the guests laughed, cried and there was quite a bit of shouting.
when shooting 3 plus hours of interviews, we learned that melissa was the romantic type, always dreaming about her wedding with horses and the beautiful groom waiting at the altar.
aaron, on the other hand, was supposed to be more reserved. as you can see in the sde, his chin was shaking and melissa’s dream about the groom at the altar came “double” true :)
ps. for all folks from the industry, don’t try to outrun the horses while running, especially if your wearing a steadicam
here’s an excerpt from melissa + aaron story’s, as well as their sde.

Konrad
this blew my mind Konrad, way beyond anything I can comprehend… I wonder how much time it takes to produce something like this
