‘the gear doesn’t matter’ is quite the cliche. while i think it is certainly true to a good extent, there is much to be said for having tools, understanding how to use them, and what they can add to your story. i think we cold do great thinks with an iphone, but i do think a MKII or 7d makes our stories that much better, or at the very least makes them that much more attractive so that more people watch and see your story. to me, it all matters.
content is king, but we couldn’t do what we do without the tools we use.
While I\’m sure we\’ll all agree there\’s so much more to stillmotion than the gear, it\’s nice to be equipped with the right tools for the right shot. Your list has items that have been on my list for a long time and something tells me I\’ll be waiting for that FedEx truck next week :) Thanks for sharing P.
Just to be the devil\’s advocate, here\’s some good insight on gear- http://kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm Not to bash you Patrick- because I know you get it- but I wish more people understood what Ken is saying…
we have some we are very excited to share. we have been working on an educational blog to go alongside our experience website so we could share more about our travels, workshops, and other educational events.
that new blog has launched and it can be accessed through our experience site our directly at http://blog.stillmotionexperience.com/
the first edu post there is about a ring shot. we wanted to share all that can go into making 3 seconds in the final piece. here is the clip itself, and you can see a full write-up on the edu blog.
awesome! i was trying to figure out how to get those low shots with the slider. very ingenious… do you bring boxes with you or just use whats there? thanks for posting this, its very helpful to people who are inspired by your work.
he he he patrick…the background and the rings look oh too familiar…you were very intensely focused when you were doing these shots…i think i also recall telling me to not look at what you were doing…what a great surprise!
the ring shot has become quite the widespread phenomenon within our industry. i do believe it was our filipino friend jmag who first brought these into his films. they have certainly evolved over the years and have become quite the highlight within a wedding film. for us, as things become closer to a cliche, we try and move away from them. what that means now, is that while we still do ring shots, we don;t include them in every sde. we also try to go that extra step and make sure that the shot doesn’t just look awesome but it also ties into that couple’s unique story. another use of ring shots, for us, is to interact with the titles either at the beginning or end of the film.
with that, i bring you a little behind the scenes piece we shot that shows what can go into one ring shot. a good 10 minutes of production for 3 seconds of screen time.
what your seeing here is a couple boxes we found at the brides house being used to elevate the cinevate linear tracking system so we can mount it upside down. we then ran the 7d with a 24 f1.4 on the slider. why a 24? well we needed something wider to allow for then negative space needed for the titles. the 24 can focus super close and is also very shallow when you do so, so it seemed like the perfect fit. we also use a lazy susan we found on the table to wipe the rings and copy out.
Atlas? I think the Pegasus will work for almost anyone’s needs except those working with RED cameras, film cameras, or wanting to do a sliding jib shot.
Hit up the Pegasus… and I seriously recommend getting their ball head with it… so you can mount a separate head to your slider and still have your tripod. Not to mention… their 100mm ball head has a significantly lower profile than most of the 100mm tripod heads (Sachtler, Miller, Manfrotto, Cartoni) I’ve used… which means slapping it on the floor is no problem! No big knobs getting in the way.
Wow Patrick
I have to admit that you sold me the new Atlas so BAD in that shoot.
When I try with my “GT” similar situations on top of not 100% stable objects like boxes I’m not even close to that smoothness.
I had a blast at the training. This was end all be all training. I’ve looked at other people’s work, including my own and I’m blown away every time I look at SM video. The whole video was based off of shots we did while learning. I said this in person and I’ll say it again. This training did not teach me to copy SM, you guys taught me how to think and open my mind to limitless possibilities and once you stimulate that part of your brain your work has no choice but to have a different feel to it. BTW the second class ruled and we will go down as the best SM training class ever. You can’t mess with perfection. lol
Stillmotion is the bomb…literally. There are so many of us wanting to take our art to the next level and the “Evolution Experience” was like jumping on a rocket ship for all of us. I’ve been to so much workshops and conferences in the last 9 years but this one by far was the most impactful and personal…not only in technique and principles but in grasping the heart of the art of wedding cinema. Patrick, Michael, Konrad, Amina…the whole Stillmotion crew…first class workshop…first class people…BOOM.
Patrick, thank you for sharing your knowledge so openly. Your humility is astounding given the position that you’re in.
Konrad, your energy is infectious. The passion and creativity you hold within you speaks volumes. It is people like you who cause others to see life in a bigger, grander way.
Michael, your insight into the human mind is amazing. I’ve learned and will continue to learn so much from how you communicate through video.
To the rest of the team, thanks for everyone’s great attitudes! We all came in with various skill sets and everyone checked their egos at the door. I must say that the environment was one of inspiration with sound principle. And I hope to see each of you again someday. For now, let’s all Facebook eachother.
Aloha!

Amina, Patrick, Michael, Konrad, Jessica and Jaime,
Just can’t thank you enough for giving us the opportunity to participate.
I treasure every moment of it (and still super excited about it).
And everyone in the workshops are so great and friendly. Wish we’d be able to meet again soon in the future!
Wish there’ll be more workshops coming up soon!
Warmest Regards,
Vicky

Worth every penny! I’m going to get an Canon A1. We need to stimulate the economy poeple!!!
I like to think Workshop 1 as “Batman Begins” and Workshop 2 as “The Dark Knight”………cuz the second one was better! YOU HEARD ME! We had croissants for breakfast on our workshop. Jealous? I know you are.
Hey Folks, This has been the most unbelievable experience I have had in this industry. From the first day, I felt like I knew the folks at SM for years. Coming from a small town in Cape Breton I thought I would be out of place, but Michael,Patrick,Konrad, and the rest of the crew made me feel right at home. I have learned so much and I can’t wait to start adding my new techniques to my shoots. I have been in the broadcast industry for 9 years and I have learned more in 3 days with SM. And oh let me know if you are having another work shop next year because I want in.
Cheers
Jason

Week II / Day I — Dennis Wood came down from Thunder Bay to spend the day with us. He brought all kinds of equipment for everyone to try out, he was there to answer some questions, and as a bonus, he got to see all of his gear in action. He was a huge help, AND he did some shooting of his own. We’re looking forward to seeing his footage :) Here are a few behind the scenes shots of everyone hands-on at Palais Royale. Oh, and I’m going to steal some of the spotlight and post some of my fav images of Allie & Thomas and Stella & Chi (thanks for coming out guys!).
Looks like everyone had a great time in week 2 – how soon till the next round of workshops? Brian is itching to go again but I’m thinking it’s my turn.
Thanks again!

Thanks for having us! We are totally thrilled to be a part of the Evolution, and it’s just cool to get to see you all again – thanks again Mike for letting me experience the steadicam, man, it was awesome.. and HEAVY! But I think I did a pretty good job. LOL. And Amina, like what we’ve told you, it’s really not about the places (kitchen, staircase, swamp, … heated stove maybe), it’s you. :)
Thanks again to everyone @ stillmotion, and nice meeting everyone of you in the workshop! Good luck and all the best.
ps. Chi & Stella – did you guys drop by Chinatown before you took off? Nice meeting you. hope to see you soon on the blog. :D

Thanks guys for an awesome workshop. It was very cool to get a real behind-the-scenes look with such a talented group of people. Best of all, it was very inspiring and I’m excited to get back to work and try some new things and push myself in new directions. Looking forward to seeing your “evolution” as well!
Mel - Still Motion Bride from Sudbury - January 25, 2009 12:00 am
John, there was a Pilot, along with a few Flyers. I cannot begin to describe the things I took away from this. I am still in Mississauga, ON ’till tomorrow morning, and have already began using the new techniques in my editing, let alone when I get back to NJ and can shoot some weddings! Now I understand why they call them Films, and NOT videos.
Awesome. I was looking forward to fly down and shoot BTS of the crew playing with all the Cinevate toys. This has me appropriately inspired to lug about 40lbs more gear than I had planned. See you guys Sunday night :-)
You guys freak’n rock!! You inspire so many people to think out side the box and to have no bounds…I love it! Thanks for being a light for us little guys trying to break through that stale old stereotype that wedding videographers have and making peoples jaws slam against the floor when they see the videos you create. My hats off to you all…maybe sometime I can afford to come train with all you rock’n people!! Love from Cali – Keep it up!!!
Joseph Jang - January 23, 2009 12:00 am
Freakin awesome! One magical moment after another.
You wonderful people at SM are making an impact on this industry, but what’s even more incredible is how you are making an impact on people’s lives. Truly an indescribable experience both from a professional and personal perspective. Canadians at stillmotion rock!! (oh and nicole and trevor, too!) :)
omg gashhhhhhhhhhhh those shoot so creative…and the closes door wow……congrutulations so amazing inspires me to be there in a few months…..i luv the steadicam too….gash dude…
+Héctor+
john - January 23, 2009 12:00 am
I wish I could be there. What version of the steadicam were you guys using? Looks like the Pilot?
Seriously, watching that this morning (5 times, going on 6) gives me goosebumps.
I don’t recall you ever calling this a ’seminar or workshop’, and that’s because it wasn’t. It truly was a r’evolution’ary experience.
What I take back from this experience cannot be explained in words. ‘Magic’ as Greg said, is one way to say it. You guys are simply amazing. Thank you.
I love the demo; next course “Still Motion – Teaches you how to Shoot Your OWN wedding” lol
It was so nice meeting all of you on Wednesday night. Brian can’t stop talking about all the things he learned and can’t wait to put them into practice. The glidetrack has been ordered… one thing off his very long wish list. : )
You guys ROCK!
Vicky - January 23, 2009 12:00 am
Wow wow wow! Allie rocks :-D
StillMotion rocks!
Thanks for sharing all the precious moments!
it’s soooo great to meet all the cool people!
Wow and I saw StillMotion’s new offering on filming your own wedding with full cinema training on Vimeo. So interested in it!!!
WOOT WOOT!!!! I love it!!!!!! Patrick man, that just shows everything we did in a way that conveys the magic of what went down in just 3 all too short days… Seeing this made my entire week…and to know that all of us who attended this workshop are rewarded by having our shots cut into a fun piece like that…Well that is the icing on the cake…
And to all my new friends from the workshop…We have made the Still Motion Blog!! Twice in one week!!!!!
[...] I was extremely fortunate to take some photos during our workshop, but also to hang around for the next workshop the week after and take some more behind the scene photos. Dennis from Cinevate also came out for the 2nd workshop to test out some new toys that he had in store, and also to grab some behind the scene footage as well. Amina (StillMotion’s star photographer) grabbed some images during the 1st workshop which you can see here. [...]

Troy - December 17, 2008 12:00 am
That is some heavy duty artillery! Is that what we get to play with come January??????
Quick, where’s my pen! I’ll figure it out soon enough :)
Veronica - December 17, 2008 12:00 am
This is ABSOLUTELY unreal! All I can say is, “WOW!”….. we can’t wait until August 2010! I had no idea about your equipment and all of this…to put it lightly, you guys are hardcore!
On Saturday, Konrad and I along with John and Amina went out to Union Station for a little photo.cinema shoot with Angela and James. We were lucky enough to get to test out a prototype follow focus that was released by Cinevate recently. We thought this would be a perfect oppurtunity to shoot a little behind the scenes trailer so everybody could see a little more of the fun that goes into a shoot, as well as the new follow focus in action. Now, when you first view the clip your probably going get the impression that John doesn’t do to much on a shoot, or at least nothing productive. However, more than just comedic relief, he has been known to snap a photo or two, but that didn’t seem as exciting as what we put in here. For those with a keen eye, I did quite a bit of tilt/shift shooting for the film which gives it that interesting gradient of focus you see in some shots.
We did have to get a photo permit, but being that we had somebody in a white dress (Angela) the permit was much more affordable.
It can go upwards of $8k per day if they feel it is for a film shoot.
P.
Bob - December 3, 2008 12:00 am
Nice work guys. Did you need permission to shoot at Union Station?
Bob
Phyllis R - December 2, 2008 12:00 am
That was sooo great! Love seeing the team at work and at play! John, most specifically, seemed to be the hardest at work! lol….amazing video, it would be nice to see more vids of the peeps in action!
Jealous girl over here! Wickedly good work… I’ve run out of words.
James - December 2, 2008 12:00 am
Hey guys. Angela and I had such a great time with you guys. It’s so amazing seeing you guys in action in person! :) The footage that we can see so far is amazing! We can’t wait to seeing the final product.
Troy - December 2, 2008 12:00 am
I LOVE THIS!
joyce - December 1, 2008 12:00 am
How cute. I love seeing the behind the scenes stuff. Great work as usual :)
Michelle Homer- Still Motion Bride - December 1, 2008 12:00 am
P.S. CONGRATS Patrick and Amina on getting married! I cannot wait to see photos/video from your day.
Michelle Homer- Still Motion Bride - December 1, 2008 12:00 am
I’m loving the fact that you guys are using Union Station a lot more now! I can’t wait to see our footage from there. John actually saw you guys on Saturday, shooting way off in the distance but had to pick up some of our friends at the GO train and didn’t have time to stop and say hi. I was pretty mad when I heard he saw you guys on a shoot and he didn’t even say hello!
Mel - Still Motion Bride from Sudbury - December 1, 2008 12:00 am
John – lmao…. Love the location! Will we see photos???
